Qatar-Djibouti Relations

Qatar opened its  embassy in the Republic of Djibouti at the end of 2005, and there was a mutual diplomatic representation at the ambassadorial level between the two countries.

There is a special relationship connecting His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir - may God protect him – and His Excellency the President of the Republic of Djibouti, Mr. Ismail Omar Gullah. There is mutual exchange of visits between the leaders of the two countries, the most recent visit by the President of Djibouti to the State of Qatar took place in February 2016, when he met with His Highness the Emir - may God protect him. This is in addition to the many exchange of visits at the highest levels between the official delegations of the two countries.

the vision of the Republic of Djibouti corresponds with the vision of the State of Qatar and the GCC countries towards the region's issues, especially towards the Yemeni issue.

Qatar has excellent relations with the Republic of Djibouti and that enabled it to mediate to resolve the latter's border dispute with the State of Eritrea. The mediation led to the signing of an accord in Doha in the month of June 2010 . Qatari mediation efforts have been also  rewarded in March 2016 when they led to the release of four of Djiboutian prisoners detained by Eritrea.

Qatar has a valuable contribution in supporting development projects in Djibouti, its share of the Gulf grant to Djibouti  was in the area of 50 million US dollars.

With the beginning of the Yemeni crisis in July 2015, the  Qatari Charitable Society opened an office in Djibouti to contribute to alleviating the suffering of Yemeni refugees, and to provide support to the Government of Djibouti in this area.

Qatar Airways began direct flights between Doha and Djibouti, at the frequency of  6 flights per week from October 2014.

  • Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Education (November 2007 in Doha).

  • A cooperation agreement in the legal field (March 2010 in Doha).

  • Agreement on the regulation of  employment of  Djiboutian nationals  in Qatar (Doha August 2011).

  • A cooperation agreement in the field of air transport in (March 2012 in Doha).

  • A cooperation agreement in  the judicial field (in April 2012 in Doha).
